Healthcare Facility Electrical Infrastructure Upgrade

Active acute-care hospital campus requiring switchgear replacement and resiliency improvements without disrupting clinical operations. AES served as Engineer of Record for the upgrade of normal, essential, and life-safety branches across multiple connected wings, including medium-voltage service coordination with the serving utility, ATS replacement, and an updated fault-current and coordination study. Engineering focus included NFPA 99 essential electrical system compliance, arc flash mitigation, and phased outage planning around occupied OR/ICU spaces. The result was a code-current, fully labeled distribution system with reduced incident energy at critical gear and a documented, AHJ-defensible upgrade path.

Manufacturing Plant Power Distribution Modernization

Continuous-operation manufacturing plant whose aging medium-voltage distribution had reached the end of its serviceable life. AES provided design-build support, including an updated single-line, MV switchgear specification, and re-coordination of upstream and downstream protective devices. Engineering focus covered short-circuit and load-flow modeling in ETAP, breaker settings optimization, and IEEE 1584 incident-energy reduction at MCCs and process panels. Deliverables included a PE-sealed coordination study, ANSI Z535-compliant arc flash labels, and a phased cutover plan that allowed the plant to modernize its electrical backbone with minimal production downtime.

Healthcare NFPA 70B Maintenance & Compliance Testing

Multi-building healthcare client preparing for the now-mandatory 2023 edition of NFPA 70B. AES developed a written Electrical Maintenance Program (EMP), built an asset register of distribution gear, switchboards, and ATSs, and supervised condition-based testing including infrared thermography, breaker time-travel testing, and ground-system verification. Engineering focus aligned NFPA 70B intervals with NFPA 99 essential electrical system requirements and TJC survey expectations. Outcome: a defensible, audit-ready compliance package with prioritized remediation, documented exceptions, and a multi-year maintenance roadmap that the facilities team can actually execute.

Substation & Critical Power Expansion

Critical power expansion project adding new UPS modules, paralleling switchgear, and standby generation for a facility requiring N+1 redundancy. AES served as the owner's representative, providing independent technical oversight throughout design and construction. Engineering focus included single-point-of-failure (SPOF) review of the power topology, witness testing of UPS and generator factory acceptance tests (FAT), commissioning script review, and validation of breaker settings and selective coordination. Outcome: a fully commissioned, concurrently maintainable critical power system with documented FAT/SAT records, closed-out punch lists, and a defensible reliability baseline.

Transportation Infrastructure — Highway Electrical & ITS

Georgia transportation corridor project requiring upgraded highway electrical and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure. AES, as a GDOT-prequalified consultant for highway lighting, supported design of roadway lighting circuits, ITS cabinet power and grounding, sign and luminaire branch circuiting, and service-point coordination with the local utility. Engineering focus included photometric layout review, voltage drop and conductor sizing, surge protection at ITS field cabinets, and constructability around active lanes. Outcome: a coordinated, GDOT-compliant electrical package supporting safer nighttime visibility and reliable ITS operation along the corridor.

Industrial Campus

Industrial Campus Arc Flash Hazard Mitigation

Multi-building industrial campus operating with outdated incident-energy data and inconsistent PPE practices across facilities. AES delivered a campus-wide arc flash and short-circuit study, modeling all switchgear, MCCs, and panelboards in ETAP. Engineering focus included IEEE 1584-2018 incident-energy calculations, breaker setting optimization to reduce clearing times at high-energy buses, and the rollout of NFPA 70E-aligned PPE category mapping. Deliverables included a PE-sealed study report, ANSI Z535-compliant labels, an electrical safety program update, and targeted hardware recommendations that meaningfully lowered incident energy at the highest-risk equipment.
